When looking for the best tourist card in Korea as an international traveler, it can be incredibly overwhelming to choose between all the options. When I traveled overseas as a Korean, I almost always used prepaid travel cards like Toss Card or Travel Wallet. They made things incredibly simple. I could pay in local currency automatically, withdraw cash from ATMs, and avoid carrying large amounts of exchanged money around.
After moving back to Korea, I started wondering what foreign tourists use when they visit here. At first, I assumed most people simply used international credit cards everywhere.
But after helping a few visiting friends figure out transportation and payments in Seoul, I realized Korea has several tourist cards specifically designed for foreigners—and honestly, some of them are much more convenient than others depending on your travel style.
The three cards I kept hearing about were:
-
WOWPASS
-
Seoul Climate Card
-
NAMANE Card
At first they sounded similar to me, but after looking into them more carefully, they actually work very differently.
WOWPASS: Convenient, But Slightly More Complicated Than I Expected
WOWPASS is probably the card I see foreign tourists using most often these days.
You can load foreign cash directly into orange WOWPASS kiosks located inside subway stations and hotels. The machine exchanges the money into Korean Won and loads it onto the card automatically.
The convenient part is that you can use it almost like a Korean debit card at restaurants, convenience stores, cafes, and shops.
What surprised me, though, was the transportation balance system.
I originally assumed subway fares would automatically come out of the main card balance. But the transportation section actually works separately, almost like a normal T-Money card. That means you still need to top up the transit balance separately at subway station machines.
I can easily imagine tourists getting confused by this part.
Still, if you want one card for shopping, restaurants, and general cashless travel in Korea, WOWPASS is probably the easiest overall option.
Seoul Climate Card: Probably the Best Deal for Heavy Subway Users
This card feels completely different from WOWPASS.
The Seoul Climate Card is really focused on transportation only.
If you are the kind of traveler who plans to ride the subway constantly all day around Seoul, this card can honestly save quite a bit of money.
You pay once for a short-term pass and then ride Seoul buses and subways unlimited during that period.
What I personally like about this system is the mental simplicity. You stop worrying about transportation costs every time you transfer between buses or subway lines.
But there is an important limitation.
This card mainly works inside Seoul. If you start traveling outside the city often—like Suwon, Incheon, or Busan—it becomes much less useful.
You also cannot use it for shopping or convenience stores.
So this is not really an “all-in-one travel card.” It is specifically a transportation pass.
NAMANE Card: The One Younger Travelers Seem to Love
NAMANE feels more personalized and app-focused.
The biggest difference is that you can customize the physical card itself using your own image. A lot of K-pop fans seem to enjoy printing cards with idol photos or personal designs.
But the feature I actually found more interesting was the balance management inside the app.
Unlike WOWPASS, you can move money between the shopping balance and transit balance directly through your phone without needing a subway station machine.
That honestly feels more intuitive to me.
The downside is that the kiosk network still feels smaller compared to WOWPASS, so you may not see them as often.
So Which One Would I Personally Recommend?
Honestly, it depends entirely on how you travel.
If your trip is mostly inside Seoul and you plan to ride public transportation heavily every day, I think the Seoul Climate Card gives the best value.
If you want the simplest all-around option for shopping, restaurants, and transportation together, WOWPASS is probably the safest choice.
And if you enjoy customizing things and want better app control over your balances, NAMANE is probably the most interesting option.
A Few Small Tips That Might Help
